Cadets & Otters 2008
The Gunfleet's 2008 Cadet Week proved to be a fantastic success - and that's official!
From 19 July the Club is holding Cadet and Otter sailing every Saturday afternoon throughout the school holidays, starting at 3:00 p.m. So if you fancy a bit of fun on the water (and also off it) pop down to the Club this Saturday.
On Saturday 26 July the Gunfleet, as part of its Regatta Weekend, held the Cadet Day and lots of Cadets and Otters came down to the Club to take part. Split into teams the games comprised of:
On Saturday 17 May some 50 people turned up to take part in the Club's Crabbing Contest and whilst several of them were over 18 years old it was the Cadets and Otters who won all the prizes. The competition was fierce and the concentration intense and at the end of it all there were some very large crabs, some incredibly small ones and even some pregnant ones. After the judging was over and the prizes handed out the competitors and onlookers all sat down to a feast of pie and mash or sausage and mash followed by a great selection of sweets.
On Bank Holiday Monday 5 May the Club's Cadets and Otters each brought down a friend to "have a go" at sailing, and in perfect conditions 30 youngsters got afloat. Cadet Commodore Michael Pedder and Cadet Vice Commodore Sonny Hart, along with several older members of the Club, spent the day giving everyone a trip or two on the water. Many had the chance to helm the boat and several had a go at capsizing and righting the boats. When not on the water most of the youngsters were in it and at the end of the day all the visitors went home with a certificate.
Cadet Sonny Hart chose to raise money for Sport Relief in a different way to his schoolmates. Whilst they chose running, or cycling, or a football match, Sonny decided to go for a sponsored sail.
On Sunday 20 April at 1:00 p.m. several of the Club cadets and Otters met in the Clubhouse and elected their Committee for 2008.
Cadet Commodore: Michael Pedder
Cadet Vice Commodore: Sonny Hart
Cadet Social Secretary: Charlie Venables
The Cadets then discussed ideas for the season, and this included a full and varied Cadet Week during the Summer Holidays, plus after-school sailing on a Wednesday evening starting at the end of May.
