Club AGM Celebrates Both A Fantastic Year And Its Diamond Jubilee
Gunfleet Sailing Club held its Annual General Meeting on Sunday 4 December where Commodore Richard Walker looked back, not just on the last year but also the last sixty years since the Club’s formation in 1962. Little did he think then, as he watched the birth of the Club, which he would, subsequently, have the honour of being its Commodore for twenty-eight of those years.
Looking more immediately at the last twelve months Commodore Walker was pleased to report a record number of sailing boats on the water, and racing numbers almost double those of 2021, which itself had been very successful. The camaraderie and good will of all the Club members had made 2022 an absolute joy, and he felt that Gunfleet had punched well above its weight in the sailing circles.
Special mention was made of retiring Vice Commodore Dave Fowell who had so loyally supported the Club, in various roles, for much of the last two decades; a well earned rest was certainly due.
Club Treasurer Peter Downer reported a healthy financial year with a small surplus achieved, despite some heavy investment in projects in order to improve the facilities. He was pleased to hand over £422 to Clacton Lifeboat Station as the result of the two-day Gunfleet Regatta, visiting sailors having come from far and wide to take part.
Chairman of the Directors, Malcolm Jolly, explained the workings of the Club and the limited company, and how the Directors maintained a strategic overview of the Gunfleet.
The following were then elected to the Committee:
Commodore: Richard Walker
Vice Commodore: Robert Mitchell
Rear Commodore: Malcolm Jolly
Sailing Secretary: Chris Maloney
Social Secretary: Sandra Walker
Cadet Officer: Jo Taylor
Compound Officer: Brian Allen
The Club Treasurer, appointed by the Directors of Gunfleet Sailing Club Ltd., continues to be Peter Downer.
The meeting concluded with a reminder that the 2023 Gunfleet Regatta was to be held on the 17 and 18 June.
