Gunfleet Springs Into Action
Gunfleet Sailing Club burst into a hive of activity last weekend, 11 and 12 March, when members got together to get the old place all “prim and proper” for the start of the 2023 sailing season. Some eighteen projects had been identified, a mix of routine maintenance and new improvements and, as well as the members, the weather also played its part.
After the preceding few days or rain, snow, and below zero temperatures it was really good to have sunshine and blue skies to get everyone buzzing. The Clubhouse received a fresh coat of creosote, on the outside of course!, the changing rooms were cleaned to within an inch of their lives, as well as getting a lick of paint to freshen them up. And so, not to feel left out, the sail locker had a make-over and has now become light and airy; this also provided an opportunity to dispose of unidentified gear and accumulated rubbish. A kick panel has been fixed along the floor of the compound at the very east of the boat enclosure, along with a second one near the main gate where the compound flares-out; this will cut down the amount of sand that blows into the site when strong south-westerly winds blow. Talking of strong winds, the boat spaces now all have tie-down rings so preventing members’ boat from wandering when we get gales blowing through (provided you tie your boat down). Rendering of pillars and walls etc. has been undertaken, a broken fence post replaced, the winch has had a thorough service, and the flagpole and tabernacle given a full overhaul.
Yes...we can safely say that Gunfleet Sailing Club is now open for business and looking forward to greeting the sailors for the first race of the season on Sunday 26 March.
Many thanks to everyone that helped this weekend at (probably) the best little sailing club on the east coast.
