Gunfleet's Work Weekend Dawns The Start Of The 2025 Sailing Season
Gunfleet Sailing Club burst into life this weekend, 15 & 16 March, when members came together to “spring clean and spruce-up” the place in preparation for the start of the sailing season in a couple of weeks time. This followed a winter of constant work down the Club with improvements and upgrades to its facilities; maintaining and enhancing what has become known as “probably the best little sailing club on the east coast”.
The traditional Work Weekend saw two days of enthusiastic participation; building the new cliff step railings, fitting-out the new Clubhouse extension, creosoting the outside of the Clubhouse, painting, cleaning the Changing Rooms, reinstating one of the Topper racks, laying the beach mats, clearing the sand from the compound, jet-washing the Clubhouse roof, wood-staining the veranda, servicing the winch, re-pointing the steps, oiling and greasing locks, hinges and window openers, ensuring the boat spaces had tie-downs......to name but just a few jobs. On both days there was a steady flow of hot and cold refreshment, plus a hot lunch for all the helpers. Throughout the weekend the camaraderie shone through and there was much talk of the coming season, the burgeoning RS Aero fleet, the large Laser ownership, and the coming Comet Nationals being held at Gunfleet in 2025.
All in all, spring was definitely in the air and a sailor’s fancy turned to thoughts of the coming season!
