Cadets and Otters Celebrate Arrival of Second Safety Boat
It’s all systems go for the younger members of the Gunfleet Sailing Club following the delivery of the Club’s second
Safety Boat last weekend. Thanks to a Grassroots Grant of £5,000 the Gunfleet was able to purchase a
safety/training boat to help with the ongoing teaching of sailing skills to the youngsters. With the money the Club bought an Avon RIB and outboard engine, a marine radio and a number of lifejackets and, with careful planning, it is also sending two of its more senior Cadets on a two-day Royal Yachting Association training course in powerboat handling.
The Gunfleet Sailing Club recognises the importance in investing in younger people in the community as they are the future, and when it comes to sailing that could be winning the Country another gold medal in the Olympics in the years to come.
The new Safety Boat was delivered down to the Club last weekend when a large number of members, many of them Cadets and Otters (that is under 18 years of age), were busy getting the place ready for the coming sailing season.
As well as a full programme of races and cruises there will be Saturday Cadet and Otter Sail Training, Cadet Week, a Cadet and Otter Day as part of the Club’s Regatta, and Wednesday “After School Sailing” so it looks like the new Safety Boat is going to be very busy on the water this year.
